MCPHERSON - Kara Walker has been hired by Kansas Farmers Union (KFU) as their new Cooperative Engagement & Outreach Specialist. She will lead the efforts of the Homegrown Prosperity project led by KFU, Missouri Farmers Union, Common Ground Producers & Growers, and NCBA CLUSA.
Walker will graduate in May with her Master of Science in Horticulture with an emphasis in Urban Food Systems from K-State Olathe, where her research focused on community resilience fostered on urban agriculture sites. Kara brings a diverse background of experiences within the food system, including working at locally owned small businesses.
“Kara will be a phenomenal addition to the KFU team, and I know all of the Homegrown Prosperity partners join me in welcoming her to this work of building cooperative solutions for rural communities across Kansas and Missouri,” said KFU Executive Director Nick Levendofsky.
In her new role, Walker will support outreach, education, and relationship-building efforts connected to the Homegrown Prosperity project across rural Kansas and Missouri. Her work will focus on communication, coordination, and community engagement, helping connect rural community leaders and partner organizations to cooperative education and resources.
“I am excited to work with Kansas Farmers Union and the Homegrown Prosperity partners to strengthen communities through cooperative development,” Walker said. “This work is close to my heart, as I care deeply about building resilient communities by developing relationships and working together. I’m looking forward to meeting people across Kansas and Missouri and learning more about their communities and how cooperatives may help to meet their needs.”
